2024 Softball Preview
Spring is here and that means the 2023-2024 softball season is underway! The Rams this year are led by first year head coach Morgahn Petersen (who spent the previous two years as an assistant) and her trusted assistant, David Spriggs. However, it is not just the coaches providing the leadership for this team.
This year’s softball Rams have a lot of upperclassmen this season and Coach Petersen has said they are doing a great job of stepping up and being leaders. “This group of seniors is really awesome,” said Coach Peterson. “We have Mackenzie Lawless, Harley Glueck, Gracie Karrenbrock, and Alyssa Dirden. We are getting Alyssa back from a knee injury last season, so we’re excited to have her back on the field with us. They’ve all four been around when this program has had success.” The experience of the senior group, mixed with their talent, is why the coaches see them providing the biggest contributions across the board for the rest of the team.
But it is not just the senior class pulling their weight this season. All the girls are focused and determined to be successful. When asked to describe this year’s team, Coach Petersen excitedly explained that, “[t]his team is gritty! They have the desire to win! They come in every day and put in the work together. They’re coachable. They’re competitors. We have a great group of girls that have been playing together since they were little. I’m excited to see the success they have this year and how much they grow together and in the game.”
The team’s primary focus this season will be on their defense. Coach Petersen says the team is really honing in on defense this year, and with the versatility of several players who are able to play multiple positions on the field, the team has a good variety of defensive options. The softball team will be living by the adage “defense wins ball games” all season.
At the end of the season, the coaches hope to be able to say that this year’s softball team, “left it all out on the field each game and gave each other the best effort they have.” The team is confident that if they play up to their best capabilities, the accomplishments will come and they will speak for themselves. The softball team is ready for competition and they may not have to wait long, as their season is scheduled to open on Friday, March 15th, against the Greenville Bears (weather permitting). We wish our softball Rams the best of luck this season and we can’t wait to see what they can accomplish!
