Middle School Bands

About 7th & 8th Grade Band

In 7th & 8th Grade Band, students build upon their previous knowledge to learn music and perform. Students perform at concerts, pep rallys, festivals, and have more chances to perform outside of the class. We work on a wider variety of music in 7th and 8th, including movie music, pop music, concert music, and much more.

About 6th Grade Band

In 6th Grade Band, students enter not knowing anything about playing the music and throughout the year perform at least two concerts. If you would like to learn to play a band instrument, this is the best place and time to do it!

How to Join

Students can join 7th & 8th grade band if they were part of the 6th grade band, if they played in band at a different school, or meet with the band instructor to get approval. Because students in this class are in their second or third year of playing, students are expected to have a base knowledge of an instrument. We do have 1-3 students join a year with no background experience if they are willing to do work outside of class to get caught up to where our 7th grade students are.

All 6th graders have a chance to join the sixth grade band during the school day. To be in there class, there are no qualifications or things you need. We do ask families to try and provide an instrument for their student if possible. If families are not able to provide an instrument, the school will work with them to find a school-owned instrument they can play.

Meet the Instructor

John Erik Jenkins

Mr. Jenkins joined our district in 2026 and is elated to be part of the Scott City School District and work with students across the music program. With experience teaching music and art at the elementary and secondary levels, he is passionate about helping students discover their creativity, build confidence, and develop a lifelong appreciate for music. He strives to grow and strengthen the music program, while creating opportunities to perform, collaborate, lead, and take pride in representing our school and community.

Outside the classroom, Mr. Jenkins enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He enjoys music, art, the outdoors, fishing, camping, and spending time with his friends and family. He also participates in the SEMO Choral Union.
