Middle School Bands
About 7th & 8th Grade Band
In 7th & 8th Grade Band, students build upon their previous knowledge to learn music and perform. Students perform at concerts, pep rallys, festivals, and have more chances to perform outside of the class. We work on a wider variety of music in 7th and 8th, including movie music, pop music, concert music, and much more.
About 6th Grade Band
In 6th Grade Band, students enter not knowing anything about playing the music and throughout the year perform at least two concerts. If you would like to learn to play a band instrument, this is the best place and time to do it!
How to Join
Students can join 7th & 8th grade band if they were part of the 6th grade band, if they played in band at a different school, or meet with Mr. Carter to get approval. Because students in this class are in their second or third year of playing, students are expected to have a base knowledge of an instrument. We do have 1-3 students join a year with no background experience if they are willing to do work outside of class to get caught up to where our 7th grade students are.
All 6th graders have a chance to join the sixth grade band during the school day. To be in there class, there are no qualifications or things you need. We do ask families to try and provide an instrument for their student if possible. If families are not able to provide an instrument, the school will work with them to find a school-owned instrument they can play.
Meet the Instructor
Adam Carter
Adam Carter is the current the band director at Scott City. He started here in 2020, and works with band students from 6th-12th grades. He also teaches some general music classes. He first started teaching in 2012 after graduating from Southeast Missouri State University with a BME in instrumental music with an emphasis on the saxophone. Since starting teaching, he has graduated with a Master of Education from William Woods, and a Education Specialist degree from Arkansas State University. Outside of school, Mr. Carter loves performing in various groups in our area including the Southeast Regional Jazz Orchestra, the Big Band of the Heartland, and the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band. He also hosts and conducts the Scott County Community Band.
