Baseball Rams To Play For District Title
**Update** The championship game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14th has been postponed. The new date is tentatively set for Wednesday, May 15th, at 4:30 in the afternoon.
Original Story:
The Scott City Rams baseball team has advanced to the district title game and is hungry for its third straight district championship.
The Rams entered district play as the tournament favorite and lived up to the billing on Monday, May 13th, with a 10-0 victory over the Charleston Blue Jays in 5 innings. Brayden Mashek pitched all five innings, giving up only one hit and striking out seven. The Rams offense scored 10 runs on five timely hits, while displaying great patience at the plate in earning six base on balls. They also went wild on the basepaths, stealing five bases in four innings of offense. The win moves the Rams to 29-3 on the season.
The next team up for the Rams in their quest for a three peat will be the rival Kelly Hawks, who advanced to the district final with a 10-7 win over the Notre Dame Bulldogs. Kelly is the #3 seed in the tournament and enters the championship game with an overall record of 12-15. But the Hawks may be tougher than their record indicates. Only two of their losses were to teams with a record under .500 and in their only match up with the Rams, the final score was a 3-2 nailbiter, in which Kelly had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. While the Rams were able to tie the game in the sixth inning and score the walkoff victory in the bottom of the seventh, that game early in the season certainly suggests Tuesday’s championship game will be highly competitive.
If the weather cooperates (always a big “if” this time of year), the district championship will be played at Scott City on Tuesday, May 14th, with a start time of 4:30 p.m. We hope to see as many Ram fans as possible at the school to cheer on the baseball team as they try to win yet another district championship. Go Rams!
